Switzerland; A country located at the intersection of Western, Central and Southern Europe. It is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the center of federal authorities. It borders Germany in the north, France in the west, Italy in the south, Austria and Liechtenstein in the east.
Switzerland is a landlocked country with a surface area of 41,285 km², divided between the Alps, the Swiss Plateau and the Jura Mountains. While the Alps occupy more of the land, the Swiss population of approximately 8.5 million people is mostly concentrated on the plateau where the largest cities are located. These cities include Zurich and Geneva, two global cities and economic centers. The Swiss Confederation has a long history of armed neutrality – there has been no international state of war since 1815 – and did not join the United Nations until 2002. It nevertheless maintains an active foreign policy and frequently participates in peacemaking initiatives around the world. Switzerland is also the birthplace of the Red Cross and home to numerous international organizations, including the second largest UN headquarters. At the European level, it is a founding member of the European Free Trade Association and is part of the Schengen Area, but is not a member of the European Union and the European Economic Area.
Switzerland has four official languages. These are German, French, Italian and Romansh. Only three languages have equal status in the federal government: German, French, Italian.
The rates of speaking their mother tongue are as follows: 73% German, 20% French, 6.5% Italian, 0.5% Romansh.
German-speaking areas are approximately in the east, north and centre; French-speaking regions in the west; Italian-speaking regions are in the south; Romansh-speaking areas are to the east of Grisons.
